Atacamichthys: no longer an enigma taxon. It’s a Jurassic salmon.

Atacamichthys greeni
(Arratia and Schultze 1987, Arratia et al. 2021, Middle, Late Jurassic, ~10cm long, Fig 1) was originally considered an enigma taxon and the only member of the family Atacamichthyidae. Here it nests between Notelops and Salmo (Fig 2) in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2251 taxa). No data is available for the prefrontal and postfrontal, here considered missing.

Taxon exclusion appears to be the reason for not seeing this hypothesis of interrelationships. Neither Notelops nor Salmo are mentioned in the Arratia et al 2021 text and their cladogram is missing large numbers of taxa.

Salmo salar
(Linneaus 1758; up to 1m) is the extant Atlantic salmon. The toothy premaxilla extends horizontally while the dentary curls dorsally, leaving the mouth open permanently. The nares appear at a gap between the premaxilla and nasals. The young hatch in fresh water, then swim out to sea.
