Solnhofen formation fossils
(Latest Jurassic, Germany) are famous for their detail and for the variety of animals found within the hundreds of layers that make up the formation. Rare as they are, several fish/pterosaur interactions have been discovered, as we looked at here and here.
When I found these before and after shots
(Tischliner and Frey 2012) I thought I’d align them and have the computer create a lap dissolve so you can see how the original specimen was transformed into a beautiful final display.
Hope you like this presentation
and I hope everyone gains an appreciation for the skills of those fine preparators.

On a side note…
I”ve been enjoying the Einstein vs. Bohr videos on YouTube in which it is clear that both of these geniuses got in right at one time or another, AND both of them got it wrong with regard to several subjects in physics. Ultimately both made major contributions. Wikipedia reports, “Despite their differences of opinion regarding quantum mechanics, Bohr and Einstein had a mutual admiration that was to last the rest of their lives.”
This ‘mutual admiration’ is what is missing from the current debates in paleontology.
